Holiday Traditions!

I love the holidays! As a kid, Christmas could not get here fast enough! I was always that kid who couldn't sleep a wink on Christmas eve because I was so excited about Christmas morning! Now as a mother, it is still just as exciting! To see the excitement on Noah's face when we talk about Christmas is just priceless! Holiday Traditions are part of what make the season so special and fun! There are holiday traditions that I did as a kid that I want to do with my kids each year, and there are also some new ones I want to start with my kids! So I thought I'd share some of our holiday traditions and I hope you will share some with me too!

Christmas Parade! Every year we go to a Christmas parade as a family! The marching band is my favorite part!

Watching "White Christmas"  My mom and sisters and I started doing this each year when we got a little older. We all love the movie so we watch it every year! Now that we are all living separately we still make sure to watch it and tell each other we watched it! I do miss those days of gathering in the living room with my mom and sisters to watch it though!

Cookies for Santa! We can't forget to leave cookies out for Santa! I can't remember if we made cookies or not when I was a kid but with my kids each Christmas Eve I want to make it a tradition to make the cookies ourselves and decorate them and then leave them out for Santa!

Reading the Christmas Story Every year we would actually listen to "Twas the Night Before Christmas" on a cassette tape when we got into bed on Christmas Eve. I don't have that cassette tape so with my boys I'll read them the Christmas story from the bible and "Twas the Night Before Christmas" before bed on Christmas Eve each year.

Cinnamon Rolls on Christmas Morning! Every Christmas morning my mom would make us cinnamon rolls for breakfast! So delicious! That is one tradition I have kept up and will continue to keep up! Yum!

New PJ's! This is not something we did when I was a kid, but it's a tradition I have started with my kids.  Every year I want to get them brand new comfy pj's to wear to bed on Christmas eve. So they'll be nice and cozy as they dream of sugarplums dancing in their heads!

What are some holidays traditions you did as a child? Do you still do these traditions with your children?  What are some new ones you've started with your children?

  1. Ahh! I just remembered that I haven't bought my kids their new Christmas pjs! I wanted to start that tradition this year and I completely forgot to buy them. Thanks for the reminder.

I also want to start a tradition of buying them a new Christmas book and reading it before bed on Christmas Eve every year. So by the time they are adults they will have a huge collection of Christmas books for their kids.

  3. We also always get new pajammas for the children. Makes the pictures too cute for Christmas Day! Our morning treats are mimosas and monkey bread.

  4. Kristen - I am so stealing that book idea. I love books so much and was thinking of just getting them each a book every year anyways, but maybe we will do it and read them on Christmas Eve. WE love to read.

Grandma buys stocking stuff and fills stockings for every single one of us, even the adults, and we all open them together on Christmas day.

We are also going to be making abirthday cake for Jesus.

We are going to get special treats and stuff and have a Christmas movie night on Sunday, or maybe Saturday, we will see.

  8. I love all of your ideas, especially the PJ's and cookies! We usually watch It's a Wonderful Life at some point, and then my family's favorite version of Dicken's A Christmas Carol - it's the one with George C. Scott - man does he play a really mean Scrooge! Anne

  9. We have carried on a stocking tradition from my childhood. We place the kids' stockings beside them before they wake up and thy get to open their stockings in their bed and then re stuff it and bring them to our bed and show us all they got.
We chose not to carry on my parents tradition of all edible tree ornaments (froot loop, cheerio, life saver, sour key garland, cookie and candy ornaments, shoestring licorice for tinsel...). But my kids help my parents do their tree that way.
My husband grew up having the smell of baking on Christmas morning so I try to have something coming out of the oven before breakfast Christmas morning.

  10. I just finished drafting a post about this very thing! We bake a cake for Jesus on his birthday every year. It's fun for the kids and a nice reminder of why we're all together.
