Mommy Talk Tuesday {Family Nutrition!}

The Not So Secret Confessions of
a Second Time Mom

This week's topic is Family Nutrition! What are your do's and don'ts when feeding your family? Are there certain foods you don't allow? What are your family favorites? What dictates your food preferences? Is it cost, food value, taste, etc.? Do you have any picky eaters? Also share a favorite recipe if you like!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So far nobody in our family is real picky. Noah will eat pretty much anything I give him. The only thing I can remember feeding him that he spit out and did not like and would not try anymore of is spinach! We don't really have any foods we don't allow although I prefer to feed Noah fruits and veggies over cookies and chips. But every now and then we let him have some. I usually meal plan around sales and what I have, so I'd say cost is a big issue in what we eat.

We have lots of favorites in this house! Some favorite meals we enjoy are lasagna, crockpot italian chicken, and taco pasta! We also love to grill out in the summer time and enjoy fresh fruits and veggies! Noah's favorite are strawberries!

Here's the recipe for Taco Pasta! Another recipe I found on Pinterest that is a HUGE hit here at our house! (Original recipe found at The Girl Who Ate Everything)

Taco Pasta

1lb ground beef or turkey
8-12 ounces medium pasta shells
1 small onion (chopped)
1 clove garlic (minced)
1 can diced tomatoes with mild chilies, drained (I just use a can of regular diced tomatoes since it's a little too spicy for Noah with the chilies)
1 packet taco seasoning
1 package cream cheese (the original recipe only calls for 3 ounces but I use it all)
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional)

"Bring a large pot of water to boil. Cook pasta according to the package directions. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water. Set aside.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet or sauté pan, cook the ground meat over medium-high heat until no longer pink. A few minutes before the meat is cooked through, add the chopped onion to the skillet. Once the meat is cooked through, mix in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add in the diced tomatoes and taco seasoning and let simmer over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes.

Stir in the cooked pasta, cream cheese, sour cream and reserved pasta water, and continue stirring until the cream cheese is melted and the sauce is well blended. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer over medium-low heat 3-5 minutes to reduce the sauce a bit if it is still too thin.

Toss in the cilantro right before serving for some fresh color and flavor."

  1. My 2 1/2 year old used to eat anything until recently! Now she is a big breakfast girl but picks at lunch and dinner. I try to have her snack all day on fruits and veggies but she isn't eating much meat. Her fave is taco salad or anything similar to tacos, like sloppy joe. She loves hot dogs too but I don't like to give those to her too often. I am stumped on how to make chicken she'll actually eat well. I have tried BBQ chicken, chicken cutlets, chicken nuggets, chicken fajitas...she just doesn't go for it! :/
